Don’t Tell Mom

Don’t Tell Mom

It was a beautiful day, the sun shining, the birds chipping, and Jerry wanted to go cliff diving.  He had texted me around noon, been overly excited about jumping off the cliff.  Even though it was all just talk.  Jerry never jumped, his chatter was about trying to convince himself to jump.  I had no problem jumping, either did Ethan.  Just Jerry, always wanting to do it, always saying he’d do it, but never actually going through with it.

I pulled on my surf shorts, got on my long board and skated over to Jerry’s place.  He was outside in his usual wife beater and black shorts, my shirt was folded neatly and tucked in to my surf shorts.  It was too damn hot out to wear it.

Jerry told me we’d be meeting Ethan at the cliff, we skated down main street.  Smiling as all the girls looks at us.  In our mind we figured we were hot shit, but they were probably pointing and laughing at 30 somethings skating down main street to go cliff jumping.

Ethan was sitting on the cliff when we arrived, watching the warm waters roll in from the ocean, seagulls were diving and riding on the up drafts.  I stood beside Ethan.

“All set to jump?”  We both turned and looked at Jerry.  Who instantly said you first.

“Alright me first.”  I walked to the cliff, looked down in to the waters.  “Cannonball!”  I yelled at the top of my lungs, then just as I hit the water I heard Ethan and Jerry yell shark.

I surfaced, saw the fin, instantly knew it was a great white, and started to swim for the shore.

“It’s coming for you!”  Ethan yelled.

I didn’t dare look behind, I pulled myself up on to the rock, looking over my shoulder to see the dorsal fin turn away and disappear in the water, my heart pounding in my chest.

Crawling up to the cliff’s top I lay down on the cool grass and looked up at my friends.  “Guys?”

“Yea.”

“Don’t tell my mom.”

The End
